St. Louis City Hospital: A History

City Hospital, 1857 - 1874

This drawing depicts the second City Hospital building, completed in 1857, at the current site. This building was designed to closely resemble the original building, which was destroyed by fire in 1856. The resemblance is strong since the buildings were both three-story Italiante structures with symmetrical facades and stone facing. Yet the 1857 building was larger and survived until it too was destoyed in an accident: the Great Cyclone of 1896. (Image is from the collection of the St. Louis Building Arts Foundation.)
