St. Louis City Hospital: A History

City Hospital, 1939

Dr. George W. Salmon took this when he was in residency at City Hospital in 1939. The view is from a window in the Administration Building looking north to the Power Plant. In the foreground to the far left is the future site of the Tower Building, which has been cleared of two buildings from the 1905 hospital group. To the right of the cleared area (in the center of the photograph) stands one of the remaining 1905 buildings, the Pathology and Morgue Building (later demolished for the new emergency room entrance in 1969). To the right of this building stands Building E (demolished in October 2002), which at this time contained a chapel and dormitory rooms. Behind that building, the southwest corner of the Laundry Building is visible. (Image from the collection of the St. Louis City Hospital Project.)
